Beautiful Glass Sculptures in Tree Trunks

Artists Scott Slagerman and Jim Fishman create stunning objects from molten glass and fallen trees. They work together on abstract forms that combine warm natural wood with vivid, translucent shades of glass. In each sculpture, a remnant of a tree becomes a kind of vase for the glass, which fits perfectly into a U-shaped groove. It looks as though these two different materials occur naturally in the wild.

Slagerman and Fishman call the collection Wood & Glass, but don't be fooled by the simple name. This art requires extensive knowledge of woodworking and glassblowing. To create a sculpture, the design is first drawn on the wood, then a U-shaped section is cut out of the center. Later, molten glass is blown into the empty space, following its curves.

Slagerman specializes in glassmaking and is one of the creators of these dazzling glass and wood sculptures. He says it was the very nature of glass that caught his attention many years ago. "I'm fascinated by how glass transforms from a fragile, yet undeveloped solid state into a molten liquid and back again," he writes, "and how this changeable material can create a finished object through a process that is as delicate as it is dangerous."
