Create a Creative Message for Your Future Self

A Creative Notebook and Writing Supplies for Creating a Message to Your Future Self

Hi, creative soul,

Come get comfortable. Let’s quiet the noise around us for a moment. Find your favorite cozy spot, perhaps by a sunny window or wrapped in your favorite blanket. We’ll spend a little time creating a secret message... a love letter filled with everything your present self wants to tell your future self. You might want to use beautiful art supplies to make it even more special!

Why Write a Message to Your Future Self?

Because life moves fast, and sometimes the greatest gift you can give yourself is simply to pause—to take a moment to celebrate who you are today and thoughtfully imagine who you’re becoming.

Think about it: have you ever cleaned out a closet and come across a forgotten treasure from the past—a childhood drawing made with colored pencils or markers, photos, an old journal, a cute outfit, a ticket from an unforgettable concert? That sudden wave of nostalgia, that smile that appears on your face...

This card is like planting a treasure for your future self to discover one day. At ARTMiE, we believe in the power of creativity and in offering the best art supplies to help you capture these moments.

Creating Your Card: Step by Step

Step 1: Making the Card and Envelope

- Choose your paper:

Choose your paper—thicker paper or cardboard folded in half is ideal for making a greeting card. For the envelope, you’ll need square paper, slightly larger than the folded card.

- Choose your favorite fruit or floral motif for the envelope:

Create a pattern: Lightly sketch a repeating pattern of your chosen fruit on the square paper. Think simple shapes—slices, whole fruits, leaves, flowers. Anything!

Color and bring it to life: Use colored pencils, watercolors, markers, or even wax crayons to bring your pattern to life. Keep it soft and airy, or go for bright colors, whatever feels right to you! You can even use a fixative spray to protect your work.

- Draw a flower wreath (for the card):

Start by lightly sketching a circle (you can trace around a cup).

Add small clusters of leaves and petals around the circle.

Don't worry about slight imperfections. They give your drawing just the right charm.

Lightly color it in with colored pencils or watercolors, if you like.

- Add a personal touch (to the card):

Add your name, initials, or a soothing word to the center of the wreath. You can use elegant calligraphy with a fine-tip marker, a glitter gel pen for shine, or experiment with different art brushes and ink for a unique handmade effect.

Step 2: Fold the Envelope

Diamond shape: Place the square paper with the pattern face down, turned like a diamond.

Fold the side corners: Fold the left and right corners inward so they overlap in the center. You can use glue or double-sided tape to secure them.

Fold the bottom corner: Fold the bottom corner up, about two-thirds of the way up the paper.

Top flap: The top corner will serve as the envelope flap.

Step 3: Add Decorations and Seal the Envelope

Decorate! Now it's time to get creative!

  • Thread & ribbons: Wrap colored threads or ribbons around the envelope for a rustic look.

  • Vintage style: If you're in the mood for something elegant, bring out the lace or sealing wax! A small piece of lace will add a touch of Victorian elegance to the envelope.

  • Wax Seal: Melt the wax (if you have a sealing kit) and make a beautiful seal to close the envelope.

  • Little Treasures: Use anything you have on hand: dried flowers, pressed leaves, small charms, anything that means something to you!

Step 4: Writing Your Message

Get your card ready, make yourself comfortable, and take a moment to pause. Here are a few prompts to help if you don’t know where to start.

Thoughtful Prompts (and Examples) to Inspire You

If you don’t know how to begin, try drawing inspiration from these questions:

Prompts for Self-Discovery and Courage

- When did you act in a way that surprised you? What does it say about you and your hidden strengths?
Example:
"I spontaneously signed up for a ceramics class, even though I’m not naturally artistic. It showed me that I’m more willing to try new things than I thought. I just need to show up and think less."

"I started a difficult conversation with my partner without getting defensive, and it turned out to be very healing. It showed me that I’m capable of communicating honestly."

- Think of a time when you felt lost or uncertain. What small step helped you find your footing?
Example:
"When I moved to a new city on my own, I asked for help, even though it was hard. I learned how resourceful and adaptable I really am. Future me, remember that you can always count on yourself."

"When I wasn’t sure about my career path, I started volunteering in different fields so I could explore them."

- What part of yourself have you been hesitant to fully embrace? What would it be like to let it shine?
Example:
"I’ve always had a passion for creativity, but I was afraid to share my creations with others. Letting this passion shine would feel vulnerable, but also freeing. I deserve to find my place in this world."

Prompts for Acceptance and Personal Growth

- Think of a moment when you felt truly seen and accepted as you are. What made that moment so special?
Example:
"When I was with friends who sincerely celebrated my successes without envy, I felt truly valued and appreciated."

- What belief have you recently questioned? What prompted this change in perspective? I realize that...
Example:
"I realized I was holding on to friendships that no longer served me, which helped me choose relationships that truly support my growth."

"I thought I had to be perfect to be worthy of love and appreciation, but I’m learning to accept my imperfections."

- How have you confidently taken up space in the world this year in a way you might not have allowed yourself to before?
Example:
"I started dressing in a way that feels good to me, regardless of what others think. It boosted my confidence and self-esteem."

"For the first time, I quoted a client a price that covered my expenses, and they accepted it! It showed me that I deserve fair compensation for my skills and work."

Prompts for Joy and Gratitude

What simple pleasure always brings you joy? How can you make more time for it? One thing that always cheers me up is...
Example:
"Stargazing reminds me of the vastness and beauty of the universe. I can make more time for it by simply stepping outside on a clear evening and looking up."

"A long, hot bath is a relaxing way for me to unwind after a stressful day. I can make time for one by planning a self-care evening once a week."

Finishing Your Message

As you finish your message, send a little love and encouragement to your future self, flaws and all!

Start your message with something simple and heartfelt:
“Dear Future Me, a year from now, I hope you’re still...”

For example, this is what I might write:
"Dear future me, one year from now,

I hope you’re no longer afraid to find your place. I hope you don’t blame yourself for your mistakes and that you treat yourself with the same kindness you show others. I hope you remember to stay hydrated and get enough sleep. I hope you have fewer headaches and more happy moments, and more time for art without feeling guilty. It’s okay to leave the housework until tomorrow and just rest. I hope you have peace in your life and in your heart. It’s okay to want a simple life.

Finishing Touches

Finally, seal the card, tie it with a ribbon, and put it somewhere safe, where you’ll be happy to find it again in a year.

Trust that your future self will be grateful you took the time to write this message, a small reminder of who you are and how far you’ve already come.
